The editor, in his foreword, states that the purpose of this book is to help physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapy personnel improve the care given to critically ill patients. This purpose is likely to be achieved because there is much to learn from this book, especially for those who are not beginners.

It is difficult to produce a good text on intensive care because the field is vast and continues to grow and multidisciplinary collaboration is called for. The first problem that faces the would-be author is that he cannot do it alone without going beyond his area of expertise; while on the other hand, a book consisting of chapters each written by a different expert loses much in cohesiveness and readability. Also, the would-be author must choose between a concise primer, a vademecum (which of all things may be the most difficult thing to write), or the truly comprehensive . . .
