This volume represents the deliberations of the Committee on Control of Surgical Infections of the Committee on Pre- and Postoperative Care, under the chairmanship of Dr William A. Altemeier.

Books born of committees are often tedious to read and impractical to follow. Fortunately for the reader, such is not the case here. There are excellent chapters on definition, classification, incidence, and cost of infection; its epidemiology and biology; preoperative preparation of the patient, the operating room team, and supporting personnel; the influence of technique on the rate of infection; nosocomial sepsis other than from surgical wounds; use and abuse of antibiotics; safe hospital design; and sterilization, methods of isolating the infected patient, and suggestions for cleaner housekeeping.
