During the past year, the editorial board has assessed the needs and interests expressed by the readers of the ARCHIVES OF SURGERY. Many have indicated an interest in several additional features or regular departments. A central clearinghouse for notices and announcements of meetings, conferences, and symposia for surgeons and related physicians was a frequent suggestion. This had been a regular feature of the ARCHIVES until 1974, when economies in publication of journals became necessary. Now that the worst of that storm is over, we are beginning a section called "News and Announcements" as a service to our readers. The lead to this section is:
