Each May, the US Army takes over its recreation center in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany, for a mammoth postgraduate course for its medical officers and nurses in Europe. The convention resembles a combination of the annual meeting of the AMA and the American College of Surgeons, only the Garmisch-Partenkirchen meeting is designed for military medical officers in Europe. The 1980 meeting was the 31st such gathering and was attended by 240 army physicians and 125 nurses. There are 450 US Army medical officers in Europe, so it is evident that a fair percentage of the doctors stationed in the theater attended. In addition to army physicians and 30 civilian physicians working for the army, there were six navy, ten air force, and 20 state department physicians taking the postgraduate courses. Some 35 physicians from other North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries also attended.
