I have been asked to write about Sam in such a way as to account for how he accomplished what he did. That is an impossible assignment, so I have chosen to write a somewhat sketchy biographical profile and let the reader draw his or her own conclusions.

Sam's father, Samuel R. Powers, was chairman of the Department of Natural Sciences at Teacher's College, Columbia University, New York, when I first met him. His mother was a lovely lady who devoted herself to ensuring Sam Sr's tranquility. She gave innumerable teas for students and colleagues. Sam's parents were the first faculty members at Columbia University to invite black and white students together to social events in their home. I met Martin Luther King, Sr, and Albert Einstein in their home. Sam's parents were both from Illinois farm country.
