Dr Sydney Kahn, the general editor of this multiauthored loose-leaf—format collection on techniques in plastic surgery did not see this first volume completed; he died in 1981. Dr Bernard Simon has taken on the project and has given us an excellent first insight into a series that is intended to fill the gap between the encyclopedic textbook and the trendy journal.

The authors are all well-known specialists in their field and in this installment they present "how I do it" chapters on selected techniques, ranging from unilateral and bilateral cleft lip repairs through cosmetic surgery of the buttocks, thighs, and face, to correction of prominent ear deformities, facial nerve paralysis, and fractures of the orbit. There are many personal observations in these chapters that would otherwise only be available to a trainee doing a preceptorship.
