This is the first complete book on running injuries designed for physicians. It describes the biomechanics, physiology, and the diseases afflicting the runner and their treatment. Among its better chapters are those entitled "Tendinitis and Plantar Fasciitis in Runners," "Exertional Compartment Syndromes," and "Neurophysiology of Stretching." Also of great and often unusual interest are the sections on stress femoral neck fractures, the physiology of heat and fluid loss, and the biomechanics of running and nutrition.
Several of the chapters such as those on heat stroke and the role of stretching are informative but lack information on the prevention of specific injuries. For instance, although the iliotibial band syndrome is described, there is no reference as to how to prevent it.
This unusual monograph will be of help to a variety of physicians, not only those who are involved in sports medicine but also those who themselves are joggers.
