The English Primary Fellowship Examination, much like the first part of the American Boards, is laced heavily with questions on the scientific basis of surgical practice. This British examination attracts candidates from all over the world who have a wide variety of backgrounds in basic science, and it is understandable that a manual helps the intensive study for the fellowship examination. For more than 40 years, a series of manuals have been published by well-known British professors, starting with Ian Aird, Charles Wells, Bill Irvine, and other distinguished professors to help in this study. The current volume, Scientific Foundations of Surgery, in its third edition, takes its dignified place in the long red line.

Organized by organ systems, this volume emphasizes the basic physiology and, in some cases, the anatomy that underlines modern surgical practice. Seventy of the 86 authors are from the United Kingdom.
