This is a follow-up volume to a book published several years ago entitled Surgical Care, I: A Physiological Approach to Management. This multiauthored volume is intended to apply basic scientific principles to the clinical care of surgical patients. The chapters cover a broad range of general surgery topics. Nearly half of the chapters are on abdominal surgery and the rest are on various cardiothoracic, vascular, oncologic, metabolic and endocrine, and traumatic topics.

To a large extent the editors have succeeded in their goal. The individual chapters are excellent reviews of their subjects. While bibliographies are not exhaustive, they are comprehensive and useful. Many of the chapters could stand alone as short monographs. The reviewer particularly liked the chapters by Abrams and Cerra on homeostatic response, by Sabba and Holman on sepsis, and by Chicarilli and Ariyan on musculocutaneous flaps, but most of the abdominal chapters were equally well done and . . .
