Surgical textbooks come in three sizes: pocket, portable, and immovable. Way's (formerly Dunphy and Way's) is the prototype of the transportable and affordable text. Published in a new edition every two years, it is now in its seventh edition and maintains the crispness of a hotel-laundered shirt. It owes its popularity to its scope, its uncanny good judgment in depth of coverage, its price, and most of all to its superb editing. Its reader appeal has a remarkable range from student through resident to practicing surgeon largely because it packs so much into so little space. This is a no-nonsense textbook. Sentences are short and frills have been editorially débrided.
