Mr Rodney Maingot first published Abdominal Operations in 1940. The success and respect that the following seven editions received have made this work a touchstone for the gastrointestinal surgeon. The eighth edition, published three years following Mr Maingot's death, maintains the excellence, clarity, and utility of its predecessors.

The eighth edition of Abdominal Operations has been substantially reorganized along anatomical lines. Drs Ellis and Schwartz have succeeded in modernizing and streamlining both the format and content. A new section on diagnostic and interventional procedures focuses topics that were formerly diffused throughout the work. The addition of sections dealing with the esophagus and abdominal trauma is timely and welcome. A host of new authors and revised illustrations complement the reorganized edition. Updates on the surgical management of hepatic pathology, peptic ulcer disease, and cholangiocarcinoma provide state-of-the-art information on recent technical innovations and results.
