In March 1985, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) authorized the American Board of Surgery (ABS) to award a Certificate of Special Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care. Three other boards were similarly authorized: the American Boards of Anesthesiology (ABA), Internal Medicine (ABIM), and Pediatrics (ABP). Three additional boards chose to have their diplomates certified under the ABS process, namely the American Boards of Neurological Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Urology. These changes occurred because the ABIM withdrew from the Joint Committee on Critical Care Medicine, followed shortly by the withdrawal of the ABP. This committee had been established by the ABA, ABIM, ABP, and ABS to study the possibility of establishing a Certificate in Critical Care. It had already developed the special requirements and had begun to develop jointly an evaluation method when the withdrawals resulted in dissolution of the committee.
