In a medical publishing era characterized by atlases, manuals, and howto texts, it is refreshing to find a series of books that will be of absolutely no practical value during tomorrow's operation but that are a delight to read. Silvergirl Inc (as they say, "... out of Austin, Texas") has published the first three volumes of a unique series on the history of surgery. Each editor has chosen seminal papers in the historic development of his assigned field that are reprinted in English translation. The editors vary widely in the method of placing the papers in historic context. Robinson (St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and Southwestern Medical School, Dallas) provides a succinct, straightforward description of the historic importance of the papers. He uses few illustrations. Both Lander and Robbins—who must share an interest in pictorial art—intersperse their comments on surgical history with color illustrations of pictures or paintings contemporary with the surgical
