As members of this audience, you are interested in the h expansion of medical knowledge. Many of you are or will be in a position of responsibility for the education and direction of young investigators. The rapid expansion of medical knowledge makes it increasingly important to have physician-scientists with in-depth knowledge in a variety of highly specialized fields. To predict which will be the most important discipline in the next decade is to ignore the interlocking of new knowledge in other fields that takes on additional significance as new findings will show associations not yet recognized. This is well illustrated within this Society with the importance of common findings in immunology, transplantation, cancer research, and genetics as we move into the challenges of submolecular biology.
