Hail and Farewell

I thank those who have contributed so much to the Archives of Surgery over the past 12 years, and I salute the new Editor, Dr Claude H. Organ, Jr. It was a great privilege for me to succeed Dr Richard Warren in 1976, and the intervening years have been joyful and challenging. Responsibility for the editorial content of a major surgical publication is of greater consequence.

I am most grateful, first of all, to those who make a publication possible: the readers and the writers. The Archives of Surgery now is received internationally by over 75000 readers who have consistently demonstrated their interest and support by high readership surveys and positive responses to queries about relevance and value of our printed material. The writers—authors, investigators, clinicians, and teachers—have provided a wealth of material from which to select and publish. So much that is worthwhile cannot be accommodated. So much that . . .
