The honor of becoming the seventh Editor of the American Medical Association's Archives of Surgery becomes immediately muted by the intensity of the task ahead. I am pleased and flattered to follow in the footsteps of previous editors Dean Lewis (1937 to 1940), Waltman Walters (1941 to 1942, 1946 to 1961), Lester Dragstedt (1943 to 1945), J. Garrett Allen (1962 to 1969), Richard Warren (1970 to 1976) and Arthur Baue (1977 to 1988). These illustrious predecessors, highly respected by their peers, have established a tradition for the ARCHIVES for almost half a century of American surgery.

During the last 12 years, Arthur E. Baue has performed a superb job of reestablishing the ARCHIVES as one of the foremost journals in this hemisphere and guided its destiny during a period of unparalleled changes in American surgery.
