On January 1, 1989, Ben Eiseman, MD, professor emeritus of the Department of Surgery, University of Colorado Health Science Center, Denver, retired as book reviewer for the ARCHIVES, a position he has held with unique distinction. With vintage Eiseman humor, he suggested that a fellow from Stratford-upon-Avon, England, might be available if I used FMGs! After publishing more than 350 scientific articles and 150 book reviews, does anyone really believe that Ben Eiseman has retired?

The quality of the man is better manifested by the lives he has touched than his publications. Dr Eiseman has been to his young associates what Winston Churchill was to England in World War II, Bjorn Borg is to tennis, and St Thomas Aquinas is to philosophers.
