This book reviews the current status of laser angioplasty, emphasizing the evolution of the technique in experimental and clinical practice. The book is edited and written (6 of the 12 chapters) by Timothy A. Sanborn, MD, a respected pioneer in the development of percutaneous peripheral and coronary artery applications of the method. The text reviews laser-tissue interactions pertinent to laser angioplasty and serves as an instructional guide to the intricacies of the evolving endoluminal methods. The book presents an interesting and important perspective of the development of laser angioplasty devices, particularly laser thermal angioplasty, as the editor and coauthors recount the steps that led to initial clinical evaluation of these devices.
The text might be criticized in that it lacks a discussion of results using some of the newer prototype laser devices and recent less optimistic reports that have appeared in the surgical literature regarding the utility of this technology.
