It is refreshing to read the summary of an article that propounds a clear course of action in a controversial area. It is even more refreshing to read in this report "that with the correct approach, good results can be achieved within the context of a general surgeon's practive."

The series, although substantial, represents about 20 thyroidectomies a year for one surgeon, ie, a thyroidectomy every 21/2 weeks during a 10-year period. In that context, the surgeon is carrying out his surgery in a general surgical practice. Furthermore, he is recording results that match those from clinics doing a significantly greater amount of thyroid surgery. The results are exemplary and are worthy of congratulation; those who continue to promote lesser surgery for thyroid cancer on the basis of the possible complication rate of total thyroidectomy should review their stance.
