WE appreciate the opportunity to respond to the Commentary by Cohn regarding the recent problems in the NSABP and his personal experiences in dealing with NSABP and NCI audits. We share his extreme sense of disappointment and frustration that this episode has detracted from a remarkable record of clinical research accomplishments by this group. At the same time, both the public and the scientific community recognize that the serious episodes of data fabrication revealed in the course of these investigations, although having no apparent impact on the outcome of the group's studies, have threatened the credibility of NSABP studies and, indeed, of clinical research in general. We hope that the thorough investigation of these instances of data fabrication and the management problems at NSABP have allowed NCI and NSABP staff to dispel these fears.
