When I first received a copy of Fundamental Skills in Surgery for review, my initial impression as I flipped through the text was that this was not a very good book and was too elementary for the needs of surgical residents today. But on a second look, I realized that my initial impression was based on the amount of time I had spent trying to develop and teach the basic science curriculum in surgical education and the selective memory loss of what it was like to be starting out as a surgical house officer on day 1. This is a must-read text for junior surgical residents and those students doing their first surgical rotation.
Behavior in the operating room and care of the patients is learned as apprenticeship; see one, do one, teach one. It would be nice to have a road map along the way, and this book is
