I APPRECIATE the opportunity to explain our approach. A lot of you are moving in the same direction that we are, and, at the same time, we know that every region is different, and approaches different from ours will no doubt succeed in other areas. What I will tell you about is not just my plan; it was developed with the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania with the leadership of that institution, and it has been brought forward and supported by the trustees. The plan has involved the input of literally hundreds of people.

The test of success in institutions like ours is how well we are able to achieve academic excellence. We know that it will be easy for us to lose sight of that as we go through the tremendous changes that are required. Our challenge will be to recruit and retain the best possible people at . . .
