This 900-page volume consists of 24 detailed chapters by 38 diversified contributors and is divided into 3 sections: (1) the differential diagnosis and management of fluid and electrolyte acid-base disorders, (2) fluid and electrolyte abnormalities of disease, and (3) fluid and electrolyte abnormalities in special populations. The latter section deals with fluid and electrolyte problems as they relate to pregnancy, children, and the elderly. The final chapter is an excellent overview of renal physiology. The Preface of the book reveals an interesting disclaimer by the publisher: "The editors cannot be responsible for misuse or misapplication of the material in this book." Fluid and Electrolytes is written in a clear style, illustrated with excellent diagrams, functional formulas to correct acid-base disorders, and covers treatment patterns for a broad range of common and rare diseases. It is a sound, user-friendly, functional reference source for the medical and surgical disciplines.
