I read the article titled "The New Era in Breast Cancer" by Cady et al.1 They found 311 cases of ductal carcinoma in situ out of a total of 3142 cases, or 9.89%. Their Table 1 showed an increase in the number of cases during successive 5-year periods. They predict that 33% of all breast cancers will be ductal carcinomas in situ within the next decade. They also predict that breast conservation, avoidance of axillary dissection, and use of radiation therapy will increase in both invasive and noninvasive breast cancers.
We have reviewed the breast cancer cases at Northwest Community Hospital from 1974 through 1994. We had 332 cases of intraductal carcinomas out of 2972 cases of breast cancer, or 11.2%.
