The tensor fasciae latae is approximately 6-in long and, on transverse section, is apt to be mistaken for the sartorius, but it is thicker and is 1 -in wide. It arises by a short aponeurosis from the anterior superior iliac spine and from the adjacent part of the outer lip of the iliac crest. It is directed downward and slightly backward. The iliotibial tract serves as its tendon of insertion.
