The Otological Research Laboratory was established four years ago for the purpose of trying to discover something about the underlying causes of the various types of deafness. From a small beginning the laboratory has grown until it now employs eleven salaried assistants, and up to the present time has received from the pathologic department of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Bay View Branch of the City Hospitals over 1,100 pairs of temporal bones. Serial sections have been made of each of these specimens. The primary object of the investigation is to examine, with the greatest care and with the most modern instruments, the functional condition of the auditory and vestibular apparatus, and to correlate these observations with the changes seen in the microscopic sections.
