PRELIMINARY REPORT ON THE NATURE OF THE PROCESS

Ten years ago in a paper¹ read before the surgical section of the Southern Medical Association, I made certain dogmatic statements concerning chronic cystic mastitis and other, as I then believed, definitely precancerous lesions of the breast. One of the penalties of increased experience is often that one can no longer be quite so sure, and so it is with our present-day belief concerning the nature of this process called by many names but perhaps most often, chronic cystic mastitis. The main issue is now what it was then, an appreciation of the importance of this condition with relation to its malignant tendencies.

I do not believe that my own experience, with due regard for that of others, entitles me any longer to look on this process as definitely precancerous, as I thought it was ten years ago, and in fact until recently. That it does at times lead . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
