In the large accumulation of studies referable to the thyroid gland, the vast majority are concerned chiefly with pathologic states, the most common being goiter with its various types and classifications. And yet not all goiters represent pathologic conditions. An enlargement of the thyroid gland is not an unusual event in the life of a person, especially in certain regions, and it often represents a physiologic response of the organ to certain stimuli. This gross change in the size of the gland is often associated with both chemical and microscopic changes. That increase in the activity of the thyroid gland is associated with an increase in the metabolism of the body is such a well known fact that it requires but little comment.
