The purpose of this paper is to form some estimate of the efficacy of neurectomy of sensory nerves in the treatment of certain irritative lesions of the female external genitalia. The intolerable itching which may be associated with such conditions as kraurosis, leukoplakic vulvitis and pruritus of the vulva with or without lichenification is often particularly resistant to local medication, whether this consists in the application of drugs or in exposure of the region to roentgen or actinic rays. This distressing symptom not only leads to excoriation of the parts, but also reduces the physical and moral stamina of the patient by depriving her of sleep. Two surgical procedures are available for the treatment of these conditions: vulvectomy and section of the sensory nerves to the parts.
