The occurrence of an acanthoma at the anus is sufficiently rare that few observers are privileged to study more than 1 case. In a study of 1,097 cases of malignant tumor occurring in 9,000 consecutive autopsies performed in the Los Angeles County General Hospital, we have had the opportunity to study 3 cases of epidermoid carcinoma which arose in the anorectal region. This constituted an incidence of 1 per cent of all the primary new growths found in the gastro-intestinal tract, and approximately 3 per cent of the carcinomas arising in the large bowel. Lynch¹ in a review of 491 cases of cancer of the rectum and pelvic colon reported 15 cases of epithelioma, an incidence of 3 per cent.
