Clinical studies and pathologic experiments have contributed to a broad investigation of the peripheral dystrophies associated with diseases of the brain.

Successive researches made in this domain (Schiff and Rokitansky;1 Charcot;2 Andral;3 Arndt;4 Mogilnizky;5 Burdenko;6 Nikolajew;7 Korst;8 Cushing9) have laid the foundation for an original theory of the genesis of certain types of gastric and duodenal ulcer. This conception establishes a direct connection between the development of chronic ulcer and the destruction of the trophic centers. Experiments performed by Burdenko and Mogilnitzky,10 Pigalew11 and Skoblo12 (from the laboratory directed by Speransky13) and consisting in infliction of various kinds of trauma on the region of the diencephalon have created a new basis for the aforementioned theory.
