Clinical studies and pathologic experiments have contributed to a broad investigation of the peripheral dystrophies associated with diseases of the brain.

Successive researches made in this domain (Schiff and Rokitansky;¹ Charcot;² Andral;³ Arndt;⁴ Mogilnizky;⁵ Burdenko;⁶ Nikolajew;⁷ Korst;⁸ Cushing⁹) have laid the foundation for an original theory of the genesis of certain types of gastric and duodenal ulcer. This conception establishes a direct connection between the development of chronic ulcer and the destruction of the trophic centers. Experiments performed by Burdenko and Mogilnitzky,¹⁰ Pigalew¹¹ and Skoblo¹² (from the laboratory directed by Speransky¹³) and consisting in infliction of various kinds of trauma on the region of the diencephalon have created a new basis for the aforementioned theory.
