Caisson Disease.

—Since the report of Kahlstrom, Burton and Phemister in 1939, considerable interest has been manifested in aseptic necrosis of bone as a result of caisson disease. It was predicted by Hertzmark¹ in 1942 that the incidence of bone changes similar to those in caisson disease would increase with the widespread use of the submarine and the high altitude flying in modern warfare. This is not borne out, however, for a review of the past year's literature reveals a dearth of material on the subject. Taylor,² in two articles covering, essentially the same material, presents observations in 12 cases of occupational exposure and 38 of patients who had never worked under compressed air. The articles are interesting in that he reports cases of aseptic necrosis roentgenologically identical with osseous lesions of caisson disease in persons not exposed to increased atmospheric compression.
