THE MUCOUS membrane in the pyloric region of the stomach may prolapse through the pylorus and thereby cause gastric pains and vomiting. Such a prolapse of the gastric mucosa is generally due to the presence of a stalky tumor, but in rare cases it is caused exclusively by an abnormal redundance and laxness of the mucous membrane in the pyloric region of the stomach.

Schmieden¹ seems to have been the first to describe a case of this kind. The patient was a woman, aged 27, with dyspeptic symptoms. At operation on the pyloric region of the stomach, he found a transverse fold of mucous membrane, which he thought could shut off the access to the pylorus in the manner of a valve.
