CARCINOMA OF THE COLON AND RECTUM

IN JANUARY 19431 there was published from this service a paper discussing the complications and mortality following radical operations for cancer of the colon and rectum. The present communication represents in part a continuation of that study and includes an appraisal of the surgical therapy of this disease in a modern urban medical center, with the greater importance being paid to the operative mortality and to long term follow-up studies.

It was originally intended to report on the patients treated on the ward service only. However, as time went on during this study, it became clear that it would be of considerable interest if we included a comparable series of cases from the private practice of one of us (J. H. G.), in order to emphasize certain features which became evident as the analysis of the two series progressed. The combined series comprises a total of 910 cases, 549 . . .
