IN MEDICINE search should be followed by research. Mindful of this maxim the editors continue the search to make the A. M. A. ARCHIVES OF SURGERY more valuable to its readers and to lessen "the avoidable pain to authors, readers, and editors" sometimes caused. according to Howie, by the preparation of papers for publication in scientific journals. We are publishing in this issue excerpts from Dr. Howie's most interesting paper "On Writing to Be Read." One of his most pertinent comments is as follows: "A scientific paper should be as precise as a legal document, but it should also be as readable as a good short story." He discusses this from the authors' attitudes, the needs of readers, and the duty of editors.
