Removal of the tumor-bearing organ together with the regional lymphatic system is a principle in carcinoma surgery. This was not sufficiently clearly formulated when Conner,² in Cincinnati, made the first total gastrectomy, in 1884. His patient died on the operating table, and the first total gastrectomy to succeed was performed by Schlatter¹⁶ in Switzerland in 1897. A classic description of the lymph drainage of the stomach was given by Jamieson and Dobson,⁸ in 1907, and subsequently a series of detailed investigations have been carried out in this field—in this country by Eker *—which forms the basis of block dissection in total gastrectomy.
