Dr. Rudolph Matas

Surgery of the vascular system has progressed tremendously in the past 70 years, and the one man who has been most responsible for this advance is Rudolph Matas, who today at 95 years of age is as keenly interested in innovations pertaining to the vascular system as he was when he performed his first endoaneurysmorrhaphy, on May 6, 1888. The story of Dr. Matas' accomplishments sounds like a fairy tale, because it seems impossible that any one man could have done so much in a lifetime and could have been responsible for so many "firsts."

Dr. Matas was born on Sept. 1, 1860, at the Bonnet-Carre, St. John Parish, a short distance from New Orleans. His mother and father were Spanish. His father, Dr. N.
