Since 1935, when Whipple, Parsons, and Mullins¹ reported a radical two-stage pancreaticoduodenectomy for carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater, considerable attention has been focused on this procedure as a possible means of treatment for both ampullary and pancreatic tumors. The number of long-term survivals has been small, however, and, as Kaufman and Wilson² point out, through 1955 only 21 cases of five-year survival following resections of ampullary carcinoma have been reported in the American literature. Part of the reason for this is the relative rarity of the lesion. In the years between 1920 and 1936, Lieber, Stewart, and Lund³ could report only 14 cases in 22,152 autopsies at the Philadelphia General Hospital. At the Cincinnati General Hospital . . .
