Last fall I was one of several guest examiners invited by the chairman of the American Board of Surgery to participate with members of the Board in giving Part II of their examinations for certification in General Surgery. The manner in which this oral examination was conducted and the results reviewed and discussed by all the examiners in general impressed me so much that I thought more surgeons should be informed about this examination. Each candidate had previously successfully passed the written Part I.

Guest examiners met with members of the Board on each of the two mornings that the examinations were given and were briefed by the chairman concerning the method of conducting the examination and its objectives; emphasis was placed on a kindly and understanding approach, without any queries about the site of the candidate's medical, intern, and residency or fellowship training.
