Lipoma of the Stomach with Ulceration

Benign tumors of the stomach are unusual, constituting from 0.5% to 5% of all gastric tumors.4,7,8,10,15,22 Finesilver11 reported finding an average of one benign gastric tumor per 7200 roentgen examinations of the stomach. Root19 found 17 benign gastric tumors in 250,000 hospital admissions, an incidence of 11 per 14,705 admissions. Thompson and Oyster22 found 66 benign gastric tumors in 20,000 autopsies. Lipomas constitute 2% to 5% of all benign gastric tumors,8,9,15,22 and several large hospitals have no record of this lesion occurring in their files.

Rumold,20 in 1941, collected all reported cases of lipoma of the stomach since 1835 and added 1 of his own, bringing the total to 33. In 1946, Scott and Brunschwig21 added 5 cases from the literature and 1 of their own, bringing the total to 39. Falla Alvarez2 collected 4 more from the literature and added 1 . . .
