The General Surgery Residency at Tripler Army Hospital is administered under policy guidance from the Office of the Surgeon General and conforms to the "Essentials of Approved Residencies and Fellowships" prescribed by the various national civilian approving bodies. The training program is of four years' duration for successful candidates, with opportunity for a fifth year for one outstanding man. The columnar system is used except for this fifth year, with the reservation that residents are dropped for failure to measure up to high standards, even though a vacancy is thus created. There are three residency slots in each of the four years. All residents are members of the Regular Army or Regular Air Force, and rotations are so arranged that at least half of each year is spent in general surgery, with increasing responsibility.
