Introduction

Despite the abundance of smooth muscle found within the tracheobronchial tree, primary muscle tumors within the lung are rare, as evidenced by the paucity of reports documenting such tumors.

Forkel² recognized a fibromyoma of the lung in a necropsy specimen and reported this finding in 1909. Neumann⁷ reported instances of leiomyosarcoma in the lung in autopsy studies in 1938. The first antemortem diagnosis of pulmonary leiomyosarcoma was reported by Randall and Blades⁸ in 1946. Their patient complained of hemoptysis and dyspnea. A positive biopsy specimen was obtained during bronchoscopy. Both benign and malignant muscle tumors arising in the lung have been reported sporadically during the last 10 years.
