A New Method for Diagnosis of Gallstones

I have emphasized for years that the presence of gallstones can be diagnosed by the form of crystallization after gallbladder bile is dried.^13-16 However, it became clear through later investigations^4,5,11,12,17 that this crystallization is closely related to the degree of inflammation of the gallbladder.

This report will present the details of the test and its clinical application, and some experimental studies of the test will be discussed.

It is very difficult to prove the presence of calculi in some cases of diseases of the biliary tract, especially in the case of a syndrome called cholecystopathy or choledochopathy. The customary means used at the present time to diagnose the presence of gallstones can be summarized as the following four: (1) history of present illness; (2) direct visualization by x-ray examination; (3) gall sand, gall mud, or cholesterol crystals obtained by duodenal drainage; (4) jaundice present or in the history. . . .
