The original description of a carcinoid tumor was made by Langhans in 1867, but it was not until 1907 that this tumor was named carcinoid by Oberndorfer.3 Numerous cases of carcinoid tumor of the appendix, small intestine, rectum, and large intestine have been reported.1 Until 1956, only 40 cases of carcinoid tumor of the stomach had been reported.2
Recently, there have been a number of reports concerning the relationship of the malignant carcinoid tumor and a metabolic disorder which is related to the excretion of serotonin. There is a derangement of the tryptophan metabolism which produces severe vasomotor symptoms, a typical asthma and a type of heart disease, which results from fibrosis of the right side of the heart. An excellent discussion of serotonin metabolism has been published by Schneckloth.4 The surgical treatment of this problem has reached extensive proportions, as reported by Wilson and Butterick.
