Enterocutaneous Fistula

In January of the year 1598, Guilielmus Fabricius6 treated the "noble matron Margarita a Gleresse" for a hernia with "intestinal erosion." He stated that there was gangrene in the right inguinal region and that bloody, purulent material escaped periodically from this area. However, normal bowel function continued in this patient and the fistula closed by itself after about two months' duration.

Much later, in 1785, August Gottlieb Richter17 described accurately the type of small hernia now bearing his name "which does not involve the whole canal, but only one side of the gut." At that time he admonished physicians "that since often no external protrusion appears, those ruptures may not be discovered and errors in diagnosis will result in the loss of the patients' health and possibly their lives."
