FOREWORD

In April, 1959, for the first time in history foreigners were invited to be guests and speakers at the General Assembly of the Japanese Medical Congress in Tokyo, Japan.

The magnitude of the meeting, the diversification of the subjects covered, the cordial reception given to all of us who were guests of the association, and the untiring efforts of Prof. Tomio Ogata, Vice-President of the Congress, and his associates to make our stay interesting and profitable are recounted in Dr. Veith's report. She has emphasized the influence of early Western medicine on Japanese medicine and has described in a vivid way the contribution of Gempaku Sugita. My impressions and reactions were similar to those of Dr. Veith, and it is with great pleasure that we are publishing her account on "Japanese Medicine Today."
