III. Ulcerogenic Effect of the Isolated Duodenum

In an earlier report we described a new experimental preparation in dogs in which isolated, circular, intestinal loops were constructed.³ These loops were composed of varying lengths of the small and large intestine whose ends were anastomosed so that a true circular loop was formed. A functioning gastrointestinal tract was then reconstituted by anastomosing the remaining portions of the tract. In that preliminary report, attention was called to one variety of circular loop which was constructed of duodenum, terminal ileum, and one-half of the colon. It was found that these dogs rapidly became anorectic, lost weight, and died in 3 to 4 weeks with jejunal ulcers at the gastrojejunal anastomosis.
