The 27th Congress of the Surgeons of the U.S.S.R. (The All-Union Scientific Society of Surgeons) met in Moscow from May 23 to 28 under the acting chairmanship of Prof. P. A. Kupriyanov, one of the vice-presidents. Prof. Kupriayanov, who was in uniform, is a Lieutenant General in the Russian Army and Surgeon of the Leningrad Military Academy of Medicine.
Among the other vice-presidents were Professors B. A. Petrov of Moscow and B. V. Petrovsky and A. G. Savinich of Tomsk. Professors Petrov and Osipov of Moscow and Prof. Uglov of Leningrad visited the Mayo Clinic last year. I met them again in Munich last September at the meeting of the International Society of Surgery and with them were Professors Petrovsky and Savinich. I believe they were responsible for my receiving an invitation to attend and participate in the Congress.
In his opening address at the Congress, Prof. Kupriyanov said that
