Sacrococcygeal Teratomas

Sacrococcygeal teratomas are unusual tumors, and few physicians acquire personal experience with the entity. However, in the surgery of tumors occurring in the newborn and early infancy, they assume a prominent role in differential diagnosis and treatment. Although several hundred of these tumors have now been recorded in the literature, not many large series of patients have been reported from any one institution. Gross2 has collected 40 cases, and the Chinese Union Medical School5 at Peking has described 12 cases. This report concerns 9 patients with sacrococcygeal teratomas presenting on the surgical services of the University of Alberta Medical Centre.
The teratoma is a tumor of multiple tissues occurring in many locations in the body. The sacrococcygeal variety warrants special consideration because it occurs in an easily recognizable form, usually in the newborn. Surgical treatment of the benign tumor gives excellent results.
