The thought of having an international organization devoted to cardiovascular surgery evolved in 1950. Professor René Leriche was the first president, and the first meeting was scheduled to be held in Paris in September, 1950, but due to the Korean War it was postponed until June, 1951, when it was held in Atlantic City. The organization was first called the International Society of Angiology, and it had an official journal, Angiology. The society was formed as it is now, with a central organization and 3 regional chapters to represent Europe, North America, and South America.

The secretary, Dr. Henry Haimovici, had a great deal to do with the concept and early development of this society. Dr. Emile Holman was elected the first president of the North American Chapter, Dr. Geza de Takats, Vice President, and Dr. Haimovici, Secretary-Treasurer.
